When Dreams, Mysterious Voices or Apparitions Save or Help People

Let us look at some cases in which an apparition or dream or mysterious voice seemed to be of some great help to someone. 

The part in red in the headline below makes a remarkable claim that Durkins escaped some construction disaster killing three others, because Durkins was "warned in a dream."

The account below is found on page 341 of the July 16, 1927 edition of the periodical Light, which you can read here. We read of lost Antarctic explorers who seemed to be saved from death by an apparition. 

"Sir -The interesting communication from Captain H. W. Seton-Karr in your issue of 25th June, in which he states that when lost in the Alps, his party of three all saw the figures of two men who could not have been ordinary human beings, and who appear to have guided them into safety, reminds one of the similar experience of Sir Ernest Shackleton when he made his wonderful march across the glaciers of the island of South Georgia.

An account of the incident is given by Mr. Charles T. Spedding in his  'Reminiscences of Transatlantic Travellers ' (p.200). Shackleton, who was his intimate friend, having described to him his amazing experience. After the wreck of his ship, the 'Endurance,' in the Antarctic, Sir Ernest, with six companions, left Whale Island in an open boat, and after a stormy voyage of 750 miles, during which they suffered terribly, they reached the island of South Georgia on the side opposite to the whaling station, the only inhabited spot.

Though weakened and exhausted by exposure and privations, Sir Ernest with two of his companions set out to cross the trackless show-covered interior. Finally, in the darkness of night, when they had lost all sense of direction and practically abandoned hope, Shackleton saw a man ahead of him. He thought it must be Worsley, one of his companions, and ordered him to come back to his station behind (they were roped together), but Worsley answered him from the rear, which he had not quitted. They staggered on, blindly following the unknown figure, and finally arrived at the whaling station.

South Georgia has never been crossed either before or since. After Shackleton’s exploit a well-equipped party tried to cross it in the summer, but failed. Shackleton’s party succeeded in crossing when exhausted by starvation and exposure, clothed in rags in the darkness of winter, and the accomplishment of this apparently impossible task seems to be well explained by Shackleton's belief that he received spirit guidance.

A check of the book and page number provided matches the account above. 

The account below appeared in 1897. We read of a daughter who has a dream of a recently deceased grandfather telling her of the location of buried treasure. After discussing the dream the next morning, she is told by someone else that she had a similar dream. A search finds just such a treasure, one amounting to $17,000, which at that time was worth much more than $50,000 is worth today.

Caught by a Dream

"Mrs. George Bauder, whose husband deserted her at Quiney last September, has found him through a dream, and he is now in jail at Chicago as the result. Mrs. Bauder applied to Justice Hall for a warrant. She said that she had come here to hunt for her husband, but could find 110 trace of him. On Wednesday night she dreamed she saw- him at work in a bicycle' factory near an immense building. The next day she recognized Tattersalls as the building and Bauder was found at the factory and arrested.—Jf. Y. Evening Journal."

Below is an account of a man being led by a dream to the right location of an oil well:

DREAM LEADS TO FIND.

"FINDLAY, 0., May 8. —It is reported here that a good oil well in Senaca county was located by a dream. The well is the property of the Sun Oil company and is on the Joseph Shannon farm. It was drilled to a depth of 150 feet in the sand and then shot. A good flow of oil resulted... Mr. Shannon became convinced through a dream that oil would be found in large quantities at the location of the new well, and it appears his dream will become a reality."

The account below appeared on page 251 of the April 1913 edition of the Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research, which you can go directly to by using the link here.  We read of a child (Norah Tappen) who had lost knowledge of her vanished father, until she was pointed in the right direction by a dream appearance of her deceased mother. Click on the image to read it better. 

The folks at the Society for Psychical Research in London and the American Society for Psychical Research were very diligent about following up on important-sounding stories such as these, which seem to suggest evidence of life after death. In this case someone at the American Society for Psychical Research followed up by sending letters of inquiry to the police. As shown on the page here and the next page, a police sergeant replied by giving an account corroborating testimony of Norah Tappen. Below is part of what he wrote:

On page 403 of the July 1, 1922 edition of the periodical Light, which you can read here,  we hear a second-hand account of a mysterious voice keeping James Coates alive in a perilous situation by saying, "Lie still!" Better evidence on that page is found in the first-hand account by Walter Jones of a seance he attended a few weeks earlier with the noted medium Etta Wriedt. Jones describes hearing voices of three of his deceased relatives, and says that Wriedt could not have known anything about them.

Below we have a newspaper account from 1908 of a woman who gets a $1000 inheritance (then worth several times more than the same sum today) after she gets three different times a dream that her mother had left her such an inheritance.

We read below of a women who was warned by a dream of a theft which soon occurred. Having had the dream, the women prevented a loss of $200 that would otherwise have occurred.

When People Dream of Someone's Death at the Same Time the Person Dies Far Away

 Below is a newspaper account of a sister who had a dream of a young brother's death far away, on the same night or day that the death occurred:

On the same 1907 page there is a story that is now ironic, for it boasts about how the Luisitania has set a speed record. The same ship was sunk during World War I. 

Below is an account of someone having a dream of someone's death at the same time that person was dying far away. It is from page 579 of the September 5, 1935 edition of the periodical Light, which can be read here. The "he went over the top" reference refers to leaving a trench to make an attack during World War I, something that often resulted in the death of the attacker.

Here is a similar account, from page 331 of the May 23, 1935 edition of the periodical Light, which can be read here:

"Amalia Burzio, a peasant woman of Passignana (Valenza) dreamed of the death of her mother who lived near Novara. On awaking she told her husband of the dream, and he tried in vain to calm her distress. The following afternoon she received a telegram informing her that her mother had died suddenly in the night, exactly at the hour of her dream."

Given the reported chronology here, the dream of a son drowning at a distant location seems to have occurred about when the drowning occurred.  We read that the body was returned a few hours after the death, and also that this was a few hours after the father had a dream of the son's death.

On page 311 of the September 23, 1916 edition of the periodical Light, which you can read here, we read the following:

"Another lady, Marguerite Ober, of the Metropolitan Opera Company, writes : At the beginning of this awful war I had a friend who volunteered his services to the French. One night, in the midst of a dead sleep, a vision of him came to me suddenly, as distinct as if the scene were photographed and flung on the wall . I saw him wounded, lying in a trench, his life flowing away. The vision lasted for perhaps a minute and then faced out. I rose, turned on the light, and immediately wrote to a friend in France. ' I know that Bruno Seyler is dead ,'  I wrote ; tell me the details .'  My letter passed, in mid-ocean, a letter from a friend telling me of Bruno's death, and every detail was precisely as I had dreamed it."

The newspaper report below from 1887 (which you can read here) describes a son who had a dream that seemed to depict his father dying at sea in a ship. The father was captain of a ship named the Muskoka. We read at the end of the account, "The Muskoka is missing and given up as lost." 

The account below is from the year 1900, and can be read here. We read of a brother who had a dream of his sister's death far away, about the same time it happened.

"An instance of what seems to be a remarkable proof of unusual psychic phenomena has occurred in this city in connection with the death of Chester N. Jessie, a 19 year old lad who was accidentally killed in a landslide at Eugene, Ore,, last Thursday. Mrs. Carlton N. Davis of 1050 Stanyan street, wife of a local businessman, and a sister of the decedent, had a mental vision of her brother's death the day following the accident, and before news of the tragic occurrence reached her."

Below is an example of a dream that foretold a death. We read that two weeks before little Elizabeth Tarver died from burns, Hattie Warren had a dream that Elizabeth died from burns.

Below we have a 1919 account of a daughter (Hazel Bonner) warned in a dream of the fatal shooting of her father:

The account below appeared in a newspaper, and can be read on page 188 of the document here:

"A few nights ago a little boy of rare intelligence, named Fillmore, son of G. Fisher, residing in Reistertown, Baltimore county, about the midnight hour, awoke his mother and informed her that he was going to die. He told his father the same thing, and when told he was dreaming, replied that he was awake and knew that he was going to die. The parents thought nothing more about it, and the child slept comfortably until morning. When he awoke in the morning, he repeated his presentiment to his parents; and as soon as breakfast was over he insisted on being allowed to go and tell Mrs. Walters, a neighbor, that be was going to die. His mother told him that he had better go and see his grandmother, if he was going to die. He made his visit to his grandmother, and also to Mrs. Walters, after which he returned to his home. During the afternoon of the same day, his mother was called out of the house for a few minutes, and when she returned she found the little fellow awfully burned by his clothes having taken fire. As soon as the fire was extinguished he said to his mother, 'I told you I was going to die.' A physician was called in who dressed his injuries, telling him that he would soon be well. He said, 'No, Fillmore is going to die;' and during the night the little fellow breathed his last. This was a most extraordinary presentiment, and during the whole day he spoke of dying, though he enjoyed excellent health.-Baltimore Republican, Feb. 2."

Below is a newspaper account of a woman (Mary Scott Turner) who seemed to have a vivid dream of being warned by her late son, with the dream occurring the day before she died in a fire.

Below is a newspaper account you can read here, one which attracts our lurid interest. And things become even more fascinating when we check out what is referred to in the little box at the bottom right, saying Mrs. White says she was warned in a dream. 

Scrolling down in the story to get details, we find a startling result. Apparently it was not just one person who had a dream warning of Eddie White's murder, but two different people: Eddie's wife and Eddie's brother. Eddie's wife dreamed Eddie was found dead in his car, murdered; and the headline above says he was murdered in a taxi. We read this:

On the same page we have the dream account below. If we interpret the part about the brother rising out of the ocean as being a reference to rising up to an afterlife, the dream may seem one that accurately foretold a death:

In the 1901 news account below, which you can read here, we read of a woman who had three dreams predicting her death, shortly before she died:

Woman's Death Foretold by Dreams

New York Sun Special Service

"Middletawn, N. Y.. April 22.—Mrs. Maria Conkllng, wife of David Conkling. living near Rockhill. who died suddenly Thursday, had been warned in dreams three successive nights that her end was near. The story told by members of her family and by neighbors to whom she related her dreams while making preparations for death is

as follows:

She was 49 years old and apparently in perfect health. Monday night she dreamed that her daughter, who died twelve years ago, appeared to her and beckoned to her; Tuesday night her mother, who died about twenty-five years ago. appeared to her while she slept and beckoned to her; Wednesday night she dreamed that a black-robed figure of death stood by her bedside holding a taper, and while it beckoned, the taper suddenly went out.

Thursday afternoon, while engaged in household duties, the final summons came in the form of a stroke of apoplexy."

The account below is taken from page 41 of the document here, a document with many interesting accounts of the paranormal. The narrator is Philip Masey, the husband of Mrs. Masey:

"Mrs. Mary Masey, who resided on Redcliffe Hill, Bristol,

at the beginning at this century, was a member of the Society of Friends, and was held in high esteem for piety. A memorable incident in her life was that one night she dreamt that a Mr. John Henderson, a noted man of the same community, had gone to Oxford, and that he had died there. In the course of the next day, Mr. Henderson called to take leave of her, saying he was going to Oxford to study a subject concerning which he could not obtain the information he·wanted in Bristol. Mrs. Masey said to him, 'John Henderson, thou wilt die there.'  Some time afterwards, Mrs. Masey

woke her husband one night, saying, 'Remember, John

Henderson died at Oxford at two o'clock this morning, and 

it is now three.'  Her husband, Philip Masey, made light of

it ; but she told him that while asleep, she had been transported to Oxford, where she had never been before, and that she had entered a room there, in which she saw Mr.  John Henderson in bed, the landlady supporting his head, and the landlord with several other persons standing around. While gazing at him some one gave him medicine, and the patient, turning round, perceived her, and exclaimed, 'Oh, Mrs. Masey, I am going to die ; I am so glad you are come, for I want to tell you that my father is going to be very ill,

and you must go and see him.' He then proceeded to

describe a room in his father's house and a bureau in it,

'in which is a box containing a remedy; give it him, and he

will recover.'  Her impression and recollection of all the persons in the room at Oxford was most vivid, and she even described the appearance of the house on the opposite side

of the street. Tbe only person she appeared not to have seen in the room was a clergyman who was present. The

husband of Mrs. Masey accompanied Mr. Henderson's father

to the funeral, and on their journey from Bristol to Oxford

by coach (the period being before railways and telegraphs

existed), Mr. Philip Masey related to him the particulars of

his son's death, as described by his wife, which on arrival

they found to have been exactly as told by Mrs. Masey.

Mrs. Masey was so much concerned about the death of

Mr. Henderson, jun., that she forgot all about the directions 

he had given her respecting the approaching illness of his

father, but some time afterwards she was sent for by the

father, who was very ill. She then remembered the directions given her by the son on his deathbed at Oxford. She immediately proceeded to the residence of Mr. Henderson, and on arrival at the house she found the room, the bureau, the box, and the medicine exactly as had been foretold to her. She administered the remedy as directed, and had the pleasure of witnessing the beneficial effect by the complete

recovery of Mr. Henderson from a serious illness."

On page 32 of the book here, we read the following very interesting claim:

"Most people that have reached middle age have generally experienced some strange phenomena before a death has taken place. Some have heard noises like

a cannon going off  ; others have heard sounds like the

ticking of a watch; or loud knocks at the door; birds

singing; loud knocks about the room or on the table;

candle lights that have gradually dissolved; cups and

saucers shaking, and various articles of crockery moving and breaking; sounds of music in the distance; also dreaming about some friend or relation that has passed on to the higher life ; pictures falling, and heavy articles of furniture, such as pianofortes, being moved out of their place; the falling of stars and meteoric

bodies from the sky; ravens taking rest on the tops

of houses; birds and animals making strange and unusual noises; dogs howling in front of a house; and  a number of other things. Some people can tell almost to a day when there is going to be a death, because they have experienced the same phenomena

before. In some cases there will be a sign of death

about a week before it takes place; others will perceive the sign a few clays before or on the same day. It all depends upon the development of the recipient."

We then hear the author tell some eerie stories of howling dogs that seemed to foretell a death. She says in the days just before her father died a howling dog appeared on her doorstop.

When Apparitions, Dreams or Visions Seem to Help or Save People

The stereotypical idea of a sighting of an apparition is the idea of some terrifying experience. This idea does not match reality very well. A large fraction of apparition sightings seem to occur near the time of death, when an apparition may seem to comfort a dying person, beckoning him to the next life. This very large class of apparitions is known as deathbed apparitions, and is discussed in my posts here. 

Then there are apparitions that seem to help or save people. Below is a newspaper account of one such apparition:

In the 1874 narrative below by Bourchier Wrey Savile, we read the first-hand account of someone who was threatened by a robber, and seemed to be saved by the mysterious appearance of an apparition:

"At this juncture my horse, growing impatient at the delay, started off : I clutched the reins, which I had let fall on his neck, for the purpose of checking him, when happening to turn my eyes, I saw to my utter astonishment that I was no longer alone. There, by my side, I beheld a horseman in a dark dress, mounted on a white steed. In intense amazement I gazed upon him ; where could he have come from?  He appeared as suddenly as if he had sprung from the earth. He must have been riding behind and have overtaken me. And yet I had not heard the slightest sound : it was mysterious, inexplicable. But the joy of being released from my perilous position soon overcame my feelings of wonder, and I began at once to address my companion. I asked him if he had seen any one, and then described to him 

what had taken place, and how relieved I felt by his sudden appearance, which now removed all cause of fear. He made no reply, and on looking at his face, he seemed paying hut slight attention to my words, but continued intently gazing in the direction of the gate, now about a quarter of a mile ahead. I followed his gaze, and saw the reaper emerge from his concealment and cut across a field to our left, resheathing his sickle as he hurried along. He had evidently seen that I was no longer alone, and had relinquished his intended attempt.

All cause for alarm being gone, I once more sought to enter into conversation with my deliverer, but again without the slightest success. Not a word did he deign to give me in reply. I continued talking, however, as we rode on our way towards the gate, though I confess feeling both surprised and hurt at my companion’s mysterious silence. Once, however, and only once did I hear his voice. Having watched the figure of the reaper disappear over the brow of a neighbouring hill, I turned to my companion and said, ' Can it for a moment be doubted that my prayer was heard, and that you were sent for my deliverance by the Lord ? ’ ’ Then it was that I thought I heard the horseman speak, and that he uttered the single word, ' Amen.'  Not another word did he give utterance to, though I tried to elicit from him replies to my questions, both in English and Welsh.

We were now approaching the gate, which I hastened to open, and having done so with my stick, I waited at the side of the road for him to pass through; but he came not; I turned my head to look — the mysterious horseman was gone ! I was dumbfounded ; I looked back in the direction from which we had just been riding, but though I could command a view of the road for a considerable distance, he was not to be seen. He had disappeared as mysteriously as he had come."

The account below is from page 101 of the periodical here. We read of a man who seemed to have seen a strange vision of an event occurring to his wife. The vision ends up being of great help to a needy family. We read this:

"Mr. C. G. Sander told of a vision he had while at Matlock, of a destitute man calling at his house in London, wishing to sweep away the snow. He was so impressed by his vision that he wrote to his wife, telling her about it, and saying she must find out all about the man and help him. When he got home he discovered that the man of his vision had actually called at the very moment he had seen the vision, and his wife had allowed him to sweep away the snow. On receiving his letter next morning, she made enquiries and went to the man’s house, where she found his wife and three children absolutely without bed, food, or fire. She gave them suitable help in their extremity, and found work for him  as a milkman, in which occupation he continued for two or three years, though he was really a painter."

The account below is from page 197 of the publication here.  We read of a man who has a vision that seems to prevent a disaster:

"One evening, while I was living in the Manse at Margate, I was feeling tired, and as twilight was setting in, I thought I would have a little rest before lighting the gas, and lay down on a couch. My eves were closed for about two minutes, when I suddenly saw in vision the gas-ring of the geyser in the bathroom turned full on. I at once felt it was a strange vision, and had a meaning. Accordingly I rushed upstairs to the bathroom and when I opened the door I was nearly knocked down by an overpowering smell of gas. The gasring was full on. I turned it off at once, opened the window and door, and let the gas go free. If I had not acted at once on receiving that warning, a maid would have gone into that bathroom with a lighted taper to light the gas. She would probably have been killed and the window and roof would have been shattered. But we were saved from such a calamity because I was sufficiently psychic and sensitive to have received from some ministering one a picture of the open geyser gas-ring, and I thank God for it. "

Below is a newspaper account of a  wife who was still alive being incorrectly buried.  Her husband had dreams that seemed to alert him that she was still living.  This led to the wife being rescued from her premature burial.
