When Dreams, Mysterious Voices or Apparitions Save or Help People

Let us look at some cases in which an apparition or dream or mysterious voice seemed to be of some great help to someone.

The part in red in the headline below makes a remarkable claim that Durkins escaped some construction disaster killing three others, because Durkins was "warned in a dream."

saved by a dream

You can read the full newspaper account below:

The account below is found on page 341 of the July 16, 1927 edition of the periodical Light, which you can read here. We read of lost Antarctic explorers who seemed to be saved from death by an apparition.

"Sir -The interesting communication from Captain H. W. Seton-Karr in your issue of 25th June, in which he states that when lost in the Alps, his party of three all saw the figures of two men who could not have been ordinary human beings, and who appear to have guided them into safety, reminds one of the similar experience of Sir Ernest Shackleton when he made his wonderful march across the glaciers of the island of South Georgia.

An account of the incident is given by Mr. Charles T. Spedding in his  'Reminiscences of Transatlantic Travellers ' (p.200). Shackleton, who was his intimate friend, having described to him his amazing experience. After the wreck of his ship, the 'Endurance,' in the Antarctic, Sir Ernest, with six companions, left Whale Island in an open boat, and after a stormy voyage of 750 miles, during which they suffered terribly, they reached the island of South Georgia on the side opposite to the whaling station, the only inhabited spot.

Though weakened and exhausted by exposure and privations, Sir Ernest with two of his companions set out to cross the trackless show-covered interior. Finally, in the darkness of night, when they had lost all sense of direction and practically abandoned hope, Shackleton saw a man ahead of him. He thought it must be Worsley, one of his companions, and ordered him to come back to his station behind (they were roped together), but Worsley answered him from the rear, which he had not quitted. They staggered on, blindly following the unknown figure, and finally arrived at the whaling station.

South Georgia has never been crossed either before or since. After Shackleton’s exploit a well-equipped party tried to cross it in the summer, but failed. Shackleton’s party succeeded in crossing when exhausted by starvation and exposure, clothed in rags in the darkness of winter, and the accomplishment of this apparently impossible task seems to be well explained by Shackleton's belief that he received spirit guidance.

Yours, etc.,

A. Campbell Holms"

A check of the book and page number provided matches the account above.

The account below appeared in 1897. We read of a daughter who has a dream of a recently deceased grandfather telling her of the location of buried treasure. After discussing the dream the next morning, she is told by someone else that she had a similar dream. A search finds just such a treasure, one amounting to $17,000, which at that time was worth much more than $50,000 is worth today.

Caught by a Dream

"Mrs. George Bauder, whose husband deserted her at Quiney last September, has found him through a dream, and he is now in jail at Chicago as the result. Mrs. Bauder applied to Justice Hall for a warrant. She said that she had come here to hunt for her husband, but could find 110 trace of him. On Wednesday night she dreamed she saw- him at work in a bicycle' factory near an immense building. The next day she recognized Tattersalls as the building and Bauder was found at the factory and arrested.—Jf. Y. Evening Journal."

"FINDLAY, 0., May 8. —It is reported here that a good oil well in Senaca county was located by a dream. The well is the property of the Sun Oil company and is on the Joseph Shannon farm. It was drilled to a depth of 150 feet in the sand and then shot. A good flow of oil resulted... Mr. Shannon became convinced through a dream that oil would be found in large quantities at the location of the new well, and it appears his dream will become a reality."

The folks at the Society for Psychical Research in London and the American Society for Psychical Research were very diligent about following up on important-sounding stories such as these, which seem to suggest evidence of life after death. In this case someone at the American Society for Psychical Research followed up by sending letters of inquiry to the police. As shown on the page here and the next page, a police sergeant replied by giving an account corroborating testimony of Norah Tappen. Below is part of what he wrote:

The account below of being saved by a mysterious voice is told by the very successful movie actor James Cagney.

On page 403 of the July 1, 1922 edition of the periodical Light, which you can read here,  we hear a second-hand account of a mysterious voice keeping James Coates alive in a perilous situation by saying, "Lie still!" Better evidence on that page is found in the first-hand account by Walter Jones of a seance he attended a few weeks earlier with the noted medium Etta Wriedt. Jones describes hearing voices of three of his deceased relatives, and says that Wriedt could not have known anything about them.

What to Expect If You See a Ghost or Apparition

In the minds of many people, ghosts or apparitions are something to be afraid of. In fiction we often see accounts like the fictional one below:

ghost fiction

But a  study challenges such stereotypes. The study (The Spectrum of Specters: Making Sense of Ghostly Encounters) was done after interviewing 39 people who claimed to have encountered ghosts. One surprising finding was that 6 of the people interviewed were professors. That doesn't exactly fit the stereotype that people who see ghosts are intellectually unsophisticated.

Another way in which the study busts stereotypes is by finding that 62% of the survey respondents said they observed ghosts along with a friend, coworker, or family member. This challenges the stereotype encouraged by skeptics, that a ghost sighting is typically just a hallucination by a single person. Of course, with their ever-fertile creativity at explaining away things, skeptics will simply argue that such cases are examples of “mass hysteria” or “hallucination infection,” or some such thing.

Another stereotype challenged by the study is that ghosts are mainly seen in haunted houses or spooky places, a stereotype advanced by paranormal TV shows in which people investigate ghosts in places like graveyards or abandoned prisons or mental institutions. But the study found that 64% of the participants encountered ghosts “during mundane or normal times in their lives.”

The study also concluded that “nearly all of our participants identified either a positive or nonthreatening encounter with a ghost.” This busts the “terror of ghost encounters” story line pushed by some cable TV shows. In fact, many people who claim ghost encounters claim to have had a very peaceful experience. One person has explained such a discrepancy this way: “Peace doesn't sell; terror sells.” (I can't remember the exact person who said that.) This finding should actually come as no surprise to those who watched the long running show Celebrity Ghost Stories, on which celebrities often reported very peaceful and gentle encounters with ghosts, particularly apparitions of recently departed relatives.

To help clarify this issue, I emailed a professor for more information related to one of his papers. I did not anticipate any response, because it seems that when I email authorities in academia, I typically get no response. So I was surprised to get a very helpful response from University of Northampton psychology researcher Chris A. Roe when I asked for details about a paper he co-authored, dealing with a survey he did of people reporting anomalous observations. Roe included a copy of a very interesting paper he co-authored regarding the exact experiences of people reporting either apparitions of the deceased, or a sense of making contact with the deceased by sound or touch or a vague "sense of presence." The paper is entitled "Perceptual Phenomena Associated with Spontaneous Experiences of After-Death Communication: Analysis of visual, tactile, auditory and olfactory sensations," and is authored by Marjorie Woollacott, PhD, Chris A. Roe, PhD, Callum E. Cooper, PhD, David Lorimer, MA, & Evelyn Elsaesser.

The paper analyzes survey data from about 1000 subjects who responded to a survey dealing with "after death communication," a term meaning a variety of anomalous experiences that a person might interpret as being an example of communication or contact between the living and the dead. About a third of the respondents reported a kind of "sense of presence" without sensory contact. Question 20 of the survey was: "Did you perceive the presence of the deceased, without seeing, hearing, or feeling a physical contact of the deceased, or smelling a fragrance characteristic of the deceased?" 34% answered "yes."

The survey results get very interesting when we come to Table 5 of the paper. Question 39 asked, "Did you see the deceased?" Some 46% answered "yes." Most of these (60%) said their eyes were open when they saw such a thing. Question 41 asked, "Did you perceive the deceased as a whole or only a part of the body?" 60% answered "as a whole," 25% answered "only upper part of body" and 1% answered "only lower part of body." Most reported seeing such an apparition within reaching distance, with a third reporting the sight occurring a few meters away, and only 3% reporting seeing such an apparition appearing "in the distance." This ratio tends to lend credibility to the substantiality of the reports. Reports of seeing an apparition far away tend to be unreliable.

Question 46 asked asked about whether the apparition looked solid or semi-transparent. 62% described the sight as "like a living being," 12% described seeing something "semi-transparent," and 11% answered the sight was a foggy silhouette.  Again we have a ratio that tends to lend credibility to the substantiality of the reports. Reports of seeing an apparition that is a mere foggy shape are easier to explain away than reports of seeing someone looking a living being.

Question 48 asked whether the apparition matched the appearance of a person at the hour of death. 17% said yes, and 55% said no. Question 51 asked whether the figure looked the same age as when the person died. 51% said yes, 32% said the figure looked younger, and only 1% said the person looked older. Question 52 asked whether the figure looked brighter than the surrounding environment.  35% answered yes. Question 53 asked whether the figure seemed to materialize in front of the witness. 28% answered yes.

Question 54 asked whether the apparition was moving. About an equal number said the figure was moving as said it was not moving.  Question 55 asked how the sighting of the apparition ended. 15% said it faded gradually, 28% said it dissolved instantly, and 18% said it was not there when the witness blinked.

About half of the people reported some touch experience going on (Question 33).  44% reported that they could hear the deceased (Question 27).  But 57% of these reported that the words heard came as if by telepathy (Question 31). 28% reported a scent being involved (Question 64).

Another paper co-authored by Chris A. Roe is the paper "Factors Moderating the Impact of After Death Communications on Beliefs and Spirituality," which can be read here. The paper analyzes data from a survey of about 1000 people. Table 1 of that paper gives summary results similar to the ones discussed above, with some interesting additions. We read that 90% of those reporting such experiences "knew the deceased." We read that only 12% were frightened by such experiences, and the great majority comforted by them. We read that 20% of the experiences occurred as "crisis ADCs." The term refers to experiences occurring around the time of someone's death, often in which one person seems to get a spooky sign or indication of someone else's death occurring elsewhere, often before learning of such a death by conventional means.

From such answers and data, and from my long study of accounts of apparition sightings, I can make a rough sketch of what you might expect if you ever see a ghost or apparition. You will probably have such an experience not in some spooky "haunted house" you rarely visit, but either outdoors or in your own residence or the residence of family members. The figure you see will very probably be someone you recognize, probably a deceased family member or deceased friend. You will probably see a full bodily figure, although there's about one chance in four you might see only a partial figure.  The figure will probably appear close to you, closer than three meters. The figure will probably look solid, although there is about one chance in five you will see  something looking see-through or misty. There is about one chance in three that the figure will look rather luminous or glowing. The odds are about even that you will see the figure moving, and the odds are about even that the figure will seem to speak to you vocally or telepathically. You might detect some scent reminding you of the person.  It's quite possible although unlikely that the figure detected will correspond to someone who you did not know was dead, and if that happens you will probably soon learn by conventional means of the person's death. There's a good chance that you will watch the apparition instantly disappear or fade away. If such an event occurs, it will probably occur not very long after the death of the person corresponding to the apparition, rather than very long afterwards. You will be likely to get the impression that the appearance served to send some kind of message. You very probably will not be frightened by such an experience, and will probably be comforted by the experience. It is quite possible (although unlikely) that someone with you may share your experience of sighting an apparition.  Some examples when an apparition was seen by multiple people can be found here, here, here, here, here, here and here.

In an article in the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research , on page 427, we have the interesting diagram below, one suggesting apparition sightings occur most frequently about the time of someone's death, but with quite a few sightings occurring well after someone dies:

timing of apparition sightings

There is another type of paranormal event that might occur to you, something not as dramatic as an apparition sighting. The event might unfold like this: you suddenly "out of the blue" are struck by the feeling that someone you know well is in danger or has died. You might be so seized by this sudden feeling that you try to immediately check on the status of the person connected with the feeling. You may then soon find out the person was injured, or suffered a great hazard, or you may find out the person has died.  In his 1970 book "Telepathic impressions: a review and report of thirty-five new cases," Ian Stevenson discussed several dozen such cases. For example, o
n the page here we read that in 1939 a woman named Lottie was "suddenly overcome by a feeling of anxiety" on April 12, 1939 between 10 and 10 AM. She later learned that her mother had committed suicide a few hours before this sudden feeling, at another location.

There is another type of paranormal-seeming event that might well occur to you, something not as dramatic as an apparition sighting. The event might unfold like this: you suddenly observe some inexplicable-seeming thing that seems to have some connection with a deceased person you knew. You may be left with the impression that some immaterial agency has briefly interacted with your environment.  There may be some strong element of synchronicity involved.  Here are two examples suggested by things I experienced:
  • On the birthday or death day of some deceased person you knew, you may see a mysterious flickering of lights, or maybe a circuit breaker mysteriously turning off, or maybe a clock acting spooky or maybe a smoke detector mysteriously going off even though there is no sign of anything around that may have caused that.
  • You may notice some physical item you associated with the deceased person, at some spot you recently observed without seeing such a thing, causing you to say, "How on Earth did that get there?" You may be left with the impression that something appeared "out of nowhere" or was moved around by some invisible agency.
(At the very moment I was typing the word "synchronicity" in the statement above, something spooky happened.  Five minutes earlier I had started to watch the first episode of a series on HBO Max, and suddenly --just as I typed "synchronicity" in the sentence above -- my TV mysteriously reverted back to an HBO Max startup screen, just as if some invisible presence had pressed some button on a remote that was an arm's length from me.)

If you experience any events like those I mention above, I recommend making a written dated record of what you saw, as soon as possible after the events occurred.  For some interesting surveys concerning how many people have such experiences, see my post here.

Any Pathway to an Afterlife Realm Implies the Possibility of Reverse Visits

The site www.archive.org is an invaluable resource for scholars of psychic phenomena and the paranormal. Using the site, you can find very many books written by witnesses of the paranormal and scholars of the paranormal.  The full text of very many of these books can be read by a user who does not even bother to register at the site.  Examples of such books are below:

If you take the time to register at www.archive.org, which does not take long, the door will be opened to a huge number of more modern books, which you can "borrow" on an hourly basis simply by pressing a Borrow button after logging in. By clicking on the Borrow button after registering, you will be able to read important works on the paranormal such as these:

An aspect of www.archive.org that I particularly like is that there are individual URLs for each page.  So if a scholar is citing page 347 of some book, he can include a link that takes the reader exactly to that specific page.

A technique I recommend for serious students of psychic phenomena is to read works at www.archive.org, and look for references in such works to other books that sound worth reading. When you hear an interesting book mentioned, then look and see whether that book is also available for free at www.archive.org. If so, save the URL for that other book in a reading list to be finished later.

I have recently found quite a few interesting works at www.archive.org on the topic of what is called after-death communication.  In such an event someone may experience some mysterious effect he may regard as having come from some person who died. For example:

  • Someone may report that while awake he heard the voice of someone who died.
  • Someone may report that while awake he saw some human form that looked like someone who died.
  • Someone may report some mysterious hard-to-explain event occurring at the time someone died or shortly thereafter.
  • Someone may report having some "feeling of presence" in which he somehow gets the idea that some deceased person is near.
  • Someone may report some very hard-to-explain event that he regards as some kind of sign of manifestation of someone who died, which may occur months or years after the person died.
  • Someone may have an unusually high number of dreams about someone who died.
  • Someone may have some particularly vivid dream about someone who died.
A scientific paper tells us that experiences such as these are common. Below is a quote:

"Haraldsson reported on an Icelandic survey in which 31% reported that they had ‘perceived or felt the nearness of a deceased person’ (36% of women, 24% of men), and in the USA McCready and Greeley found that 27% of respondents answered affirmatively the question ‘Have you ever felt that you were really in touch with someone who had died?’ In the UK, an Ipsos MORI poll found that 17% of their sample claimed to have personally experienced a ‘ghost’, and a subsequent poll found that 10.4% had experienced an ADC [after-death communication].  In Germany the incidence of having experienced an ‘apparition’ (described as perceiving something they took for a ‘ghost’ of someone who had died) was 15.8% (18.6% of women, 11.3% of men). These experiences seem to be independent of culture or religious affiliation."

One very interesting book on this topic (which can be read at www.archive.org) is the 2005 book "Induced After-Death Communication : A New Therapy for Healing Grief and Trauma" by Alan L. Botkin, who holds a Doctor of Psychology degree. After mentioning 20 years of experience treating subjects at a Chicago Veterans Administration hospital, Botkin describes a very high success rate treating grief-stricken subjects or subjects suffering from PTSD (post-traumatic stress syndrome), using an extremely unorthodox technique.  The technique first involves something called  EMDR (eye movement desenitization and reprocessing), which sounds a bit like hypnosis.  The technique somehow leads to subjects reporting visions of the deceased, experiences that end up having a highly therapeutic value.  Botkin says he has used that technique on thousands of patients, and claims "the therapy method has worked for nearly everyone with whom we have had sessions."  Conversely, conventional therapeutic methods of treating PTSD tend to be very much less effective.

On page 32 Botkin states that the cases he treats often involve someone haunted by some image of the last time they saw a dead person, perhaps a distressed or disfigured face or a badly wounded person. He says that with his technique such a distressing image is replaced by an image of the same person but with some smiling face, often accompanied by words claiming well-being or happiness.  On page 36 Botkin states that these "induced after-death communication" experiences which his subjects report typically last between 5 and 20 seconds, but may last as long as 10 to 20 minutes.  A movie recently atttempted to document therapeutic treatment based on Botkin's technique. You can learn about the movie at this site.

Botkin's book has been largely ignored, which is a shame. Regardless of whether such experiences do or do not come from actual contact with the deceased, a technique that is so powerfully effective deserves the fullest attention of psychiatrists and psychologists.  What has occurred is just another example of the massive failure of psychiatrists and psychologists to follow up on promising leads, while continuing to stick with ineffective techniques that are largely chemical based.  In the nineteenth century before 1870 very many hypnotists reported the most astonishing medical improvements and useful medical effects (physical and psychological) from hypnotic treatment, which were long referred to under the name of Mesmerism or animal magnetism.  But after about 1870 there was little effort by psychologists to follow up on such successes, using the methods that had produced the successes. There was often a practice of hypnotism, but a kind of watered-down version of hypnotism that was not as effective.

Two other books on after-death communication that can be read on www.archive.org are the book After Death Communication by Emma Heathcote-James and the book Messages and Miracles: Extraordinary Experiences of the Bereaved by Louis E. Legrand PhD. In these books we have many accounts of apparition sightings.  Countless apparition sightings were reported in the literature of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, as you can read about in the post here and the posts that post links to. Some have claimed that in modern times apparitions are seen less frequently, but judging from the accounts in these books, that is not the case.

On page 137 of the Legrand book, we have an interesting list of different types of apparitions that people report seeing. These include two-dimensional apparitions like seeing a photo, three-dimensional apparitions in which someone may look as real as if he were still alive on Earth, mist-shrouded or translucent apparitions, apparitions that appear only as a figure, and "angelic" apparitions in which someone may appear surrounded by light.  For example, in a different book on after-death communications by a different PhD, we have on page 30 an account of a person saying she saw her deceased sister standing in a doorway "as solid as you or me," with an instant disappearance "in the blink of an eye." But on the next page we have an account by a different person saying she saw her deceased father "see-through, but with color," an apparition that "began fading until it just disappeared."  The author of the book (Edie Devers) says, "Many people report seeing the deceased as a living person (no different from any other living person) or as a spiritual entity (transparent and/or not in a physical body)."

The book by Legrand has very many lengthy first-person accounts of people who reported having hard-to-explain experiences that the author has categorized as after-death communication.  One minor imperfection with Legrand's book is that he repeatedly defines after-death communication as if it only occurred with mourning people, but quite a few experiences like those in my bullet list above seem to occur to people who are no longer mourning some friend or relative who died.

The book is written in question-and-answer format. On pages 101-102 Legrand considers the question of how some soul could make contact with an earthly relative (or give some sign to an earthly relative) after that soul had progressed to some afterlife realm.  Legrand's answer is a poor one. He basically appeals to the miraculous, saying that this could happen if God willed it or some angel helped it happen.  He could have answered the question in a better way.

Let us consider the hypothesis that a human soul can survive death and progress or travel to some afterlife realm of existence. It is not necessary to maintain that such a thing happens each time by some divine fiat, by some miraculous intervention.  Following the very strong evidence (discussed in the posts of this site) that the brain is absolutely inadequate to account for human mental phenomena and human memory, we can believe very justifiably that the real basis of human minds and human memory is some non-neural soul. If humans have a soul, there could be some transit path by which souls can leave Earth and go elsewhere.  Evidence from near-death experiences suggest that there may well be such a transit path. Commonly people in near-death experiences experience something like traveling through a tunnel or arriving in some afterlife realm where deceased ancestors are seen.  If such a transit path exists,  then that implies a strong possibility or probability that the path allows travel in both directions.

Humans sometimes construct one-way transit paths. But most of nature's transit paths are two-way paths.  For example, a river and a lake and an ocean can be crossed going in either direction. So can a mountain pass or a desert plain or a meadow or the atmosphere (in which helicopters or spacecraft can traverse going up or down).  It is relatively rare to find in nature a one-way transit path (a waterfall is practically the only example I can think of).

One of nature's rather rare one-way paths

If a human soul could somehow leave our earthly realm and go to some other state of existence, this tends to imply the possibility of a return (possibly a very brief return) by which the journey can be made in the opposite direction.  So if Joe believes that his late mother died and that her soul went to some heaven or afterlife realm, it would seem that Joe should not be terribly surprised to see such a person briefly returning (or perhaps some sign created by the invisible presence of such a person after briefly returning).  Most paths of travel are two-way paths rather than one-way paths.

Mysterious appearances of coins are some of the things that many people regard as examples of manifestations from the departed or some other strange reality, perhaps angels. I have had innumerable mysterious-seeming occurrences involving coins, such as seeing a coin roll up from behind me (on its edge) while I was alone in an apartment, and just after I had double-checked that there were no loose coins in the apartment (a checking that followed what seemed like, over several days, a great repetition of finding mysterious coins in the apartment).  Just after publishing this post on my blog today, I found a dime in my shoe, right under the heel of my foot. The shoe (a typical running shoe like the one here) was one which I had previously worn a few minutes earlier without noticing any such thing.

An interesting and very speculative hypothesis is that it is possible for some mysterious unseen presence to move or materialize objects in our world, but that the more massive the object, the harder such a task is. In such a case we might expect strange events involving very lightweight objects such as dimes and hairs and small feathers to occur vastly more often than strange events involving heavy objects.  In a 2018 post I stated, "Since 2014 the breakdown of the number of anomalous-seeming coins I have sighted is as follows: 121 pennies, only two nickels, 20 quarters, and 62 dimes, for a total of 205 coins."  What is striking here is that I recorded hard-to-explain dimes appearing 36 times more frequently than hard-to-explain nickels, but in the US coin population dimes are only about twice as common as nickels.  So it is incredibly unlikely that such a 36-to-1 ratio would occur among some random set of hundreds of coins.  The difference might have to do with the fact that a nickel is about twice as heavy as a dime. Under the imaginative hypothesis I mentioned, the sighting of hard-to-explain nickels might be less common because it is harder for spooky things to happen with heavier objects.
